Denmark was given the privilege to organize the Women's Handball World Cup under the sponsorship of GF Insurance. The programme of the event is similar to that of the men's, i.e. the top eight teams can compete for the cup. The final phase of the tournament will be held in Atletion Arena of Aarhus, which has a capacity for 4850 spectators.
The list of participants include hosting Denmark, as well as Norway and Sweden, but the reigning European, World and Olympic champions are also invited. This way Hungary can compete as well, since the top two medalists of the ECh were Norway and Denmark, specifically. France qualified as World Championship title-holders while Korea is expected to receive an invitation card on account of their silver medal in the Games.
The 1st World Cup will be held on November 15, 2005, broadcast by Danish TV2. The participating sides will be distributed in two four-team groups. The winner of Group A will face the runner-up of Group B in the semifinal. The gold medalist of the tournament will win EUR 25 000, the second gets 15 000, the third receives 10 000, while the fourth has to go home with 5 thousand Euros in their pocket. There will be no placement matches for spots 5-8.
