World Handball Player 2005: Who will succeed Anita Kulcsar and Henning Fritz?
It is your turn again: Who is allowed to call herself/himself World Handball Player of the Year? With your help, we are looking for the outstanding stars of the year 2005 to take over the sceptre from Anita Kulcsar and Henning Fritz. In 2004 the Hungarian pivot, who died in a car accident, and the German goalkeeper finished at the top to win the great reader’s choice of the World Handball Magazine that has been promoted by sports apparel giant “adidas” for years.
As it did last year, the WHM editorial team tries to inspire you with a range of short-listed candidates: In the men’s and women’s categories we offer you the All-Star Team of the World Championships in Tunisia (men) and St Petersburg (women). Since even this method will be a topic of discussions, you, dear readers, have a free choice. You may nominate any female or male player who played regularly in 2005. In doing so, not only facts and figures from the many international top games should form the basis, after all a World Handball Player is also considered as a special ambassador of our sport. Consequently the behaviour as on as off court alike should set an example. This may certainly be a criteria for your vote too.
Please use the online form to cast your vote for the World Handball Player 2005, by following this link.
The proposals of the WHM editorial team:
Women:
Luminita Dinu (ROM) – Sometimes she saves like a woman coming from another planet: Thanks to amazing saves the 34-year-old made Romania feel save over and over again. Dinu plays with Slovenia’s double Champions League winner Ljubljana and she had already been an important pillar of the Romanian team at the 1999 WC when the team ranked fourth.
Valentina Neli Ardean Lisei (ROM) –An all-round specialist every coach is dreaming of: the 23-year-old not only counts among the best left wings, but is also dangerous from the back-court and is able to direct at times. Besides Dinu, Ardean Nilsei is one of the main reasons for the Romania’s renaissance.
Pearl van der Wissel (NED) –She had already been well known among handball experts, but like the Netherlands she conquered the hearts of the spectators only at the last WC. The 21-year-old right hander playing for Danish Gudme does not show strength but technical elegance in particular to fulfil her task in the left back-court.
Anita Görbicz (HUN) – It is without controversy that the 22-year-old gracile centre player is the boss of her team. Görbicz led Hungary to the 2003 WC final and had a lion’s share in winning the bronze medal. In her second WC appearance she was elected to the All-Star Team for the second time.
Grit Jurack (GER) – The tall left-hander had already been Germany’s top scorer at the 1999 WC. The 28-year-old does not only shine as a powerful thrower but also passes smartly. Jurack plays with the colours of Danish top team Viborg HK.
Sun-Hee Woo (KOR) - A right wing and one of South Korea’s excellent whirlwinds. The 27-year-old left hander was already part of the All-Star Teams of the 2003 WC and the latest Olympic Games.
Liudmila Bodnieva (RUS) – Russia’s pivot as strong as flexible has been setting the international benchmark for years. The 27-year-old had already been elected to the All-Star Team after Trefilov’s first triumph in Italy. Bodviena plays with Ljubljana such as goalkeeper Dinu.
Men:
Eduard Kokcharov (RUS) – ‘The man to rely on’ on the left wing. Hardly any other player is as uncompromising as the swift-as-an-arrow Russian. The wing player of Slovenia’s top club Celje represents rustic Russian handball school as well as creativity of the ingenious Scandinavian philosophy. A guarantor for success as within his club as within the national team.
Wissem Hmam (TUN) – ‘The Tunisian hammer’ – Hmam is sanguine dynamite, his shots are as dangerous as revolver bullets. He scored 81 goals at the WC in his own country. Apart from the top scorer crown the 24-year-old could celebrate fourth place. Even his own keepers of his club in France are fearing his shots.Ivano Balic (CRO) – ‘The general’ – Without director Balic, Croatia looks pale, with him, the game of the Olympic champion shines in all colours of the rainbow. Balic is the head, the thinker and the leader of the successful Croatian handball. He gained the 2003 Player of the Year award, became World champion and Olympic champion. Balic is a symbol of success.
Mateo Garralda (ESP) – ‘The Spanish Taurus’ – Left hander Garralda is a model Spaniard: proud, full of emotion and energy. The 35-year-old has reached the peak of his long career. Finally in Tunisia he celebrated international gold and so made himself immortal in his home country.
Mirza Dzomba (CRO) – ‘The iceman’ – Nobody is as ice-cold as right winger Dzomba when shooting. The left hander masters all types of shooting no matter if speed, finesse or strength. A world-class player over years and maybe one of the best right wings worldwide. His goals made Croatia win WC silver in Tunisia.
David Juricek (CZE) – ‘The professor’ – Pivot Juricek is intelligent and successful alike. The Czech graduated from university apart from his career as a professional handball player. Since then, he has been analysing the opponent’s defence and to systematically discover weak points.
Arpad Sterbik (SCG) – ‘The bear’ – The massy goalkeeper has been a class of his own for years. Sometimes maybe underestimated optically, the Serb shines due to reflexes at lightning speed and stoic calmness. He found his sporting home at Ciudad Real in Spain.
